Drum Atlas: India - Alfred Publishing 2009
The Total Jazz Drummer - Alfred Publishing 2007
The music of India is a rich source of rhythmic theory and tradition that remains largely untapped by modern drummers. Drum Atlas: India explains how the traditional rhythms of instruments such as the tabla, mridangam, and dhol can be adapted to the modern drumset. You’ll start by learning the bol, or spoken syllables that Indian percussionists have used for centuries to communicate drum patterns. Then, you’ll learn the theory behind tal, rhythmic cycles of various numbers of beats. Indian rhythms are often composed of familiar patterns with 3, 4, 6, 8, or 16 beats, but sometimes delve into patterns of 5 or 7 beats that may seem unusual to a Western drummer. Mastering this knowledge will improve your soloing, linear phrasing, and subdividing skills. You’ll also learn how you can incorporate Indian rhythmic concepts into other musical styles, such as rock, funk, and jazz. A CD is included with backing tracks to practice with.
The Total Jazz Drummer is an exciting journey through the diverse world of jazz drumming. You start with basic lessons in grip and rhythm and end up playing solos in the styles of Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, "Philly" Joe Jones and Max Roach. This wide-ranging study of jazz drums is for all players from beginning to advanced. The beginning-to-intermediate student will find all the tools needed to become a great player, while the more advanced player will find lots of useful tips and a fresh perspective on jazz drumming. This book features many of the styles that make the instrument and genre of jazz drumming so challenging yet rewarding: from second line (street beat), bossa nova, Samba, clave, mambo and salsa to Songo, Bembe, Abakwa and Calypso. This is the one place to get everything you need to make you a great jazz drummer. A CD is included with backing tracks to practice with.

JAZZ REVIEW :: by Roman St. James
The magic of this recording is how well it has been executed and how the variously elements are all mesh together so seamlessly.  This is music that feels both ultra-modern and ‘old’. I believe it is a glimpse of the potential for amazing art that the young jazz players of today are capable of when they mix the old with the new.  > Read article
